Central Passage
Proverbs 29:18

Is vision a gift from the Lord?

  • No, it’s something that you seek for, wanting to do something with God.
  • Vision produces drive
    • Without it there is little to no drive.

1 Samuel 3:1 KJV And the child Samuel ministered unto the Lord before Eli. And the word of the Lord was precious in those days; there was no open vision.

  • AMP there was no frequent or widely spread vision.
  • NKJV there was no widespread revelation.
    • Open (Hebrew) parats (paw-rats'); to break out
    • Vision (Hebrew) chazah (khaw-zaw'); a primitive root; to gaze at; mentally, to perceive

The reason there was no vision is because Eli put his personal interests before the house of the Lord

  • 1 Samuel 2:27a & 29 NAS 27 Then a man of God came to Eli and said to him,…29 'Why do you kick at My sacrifice and at My offering which I have commanded in My dwelling, and honor your sons above Me, by making yourselves fat with the choicest of every offering of My people Israel?
    • Eli’s sons would steal sacrificial meat from the people and God
    • Eli ate of it and the bible says when he died he was very heavy

Proverbs 29:18a KJV Where there is no vision, the people perish

  • Perish (Hebrew) para` (paw-rah'); a primitive root; to loosen; by implication, to expose KJV - bare, go back, (make) naked, perish, uncover.
    • Proverbs 29:18a YLT Without a Vision is a people made naked

To see vision you will need to look farther than your natural reach or abilities.

God’s people under estimate themselves

Top reasons for not trying:

  • Don’t know where to start
  • Fear of failure (Matthew 25:24 “I was afraid)
  • Lazy, don’t want to go through the trouble (Matthew 25:25 “Wicked and lazy slave)

Do you have a vision for what you’re doing that’s tied to the kingdom?

John Maxwell: The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth - If you have dreams, goals, or aspirations, you need to grow to achieve them. But if you’re like I was— and if you’re like most people— you have one or more mistaken beliefs that create a gap that keeps you from growing and reaching your potential. Take a look at the following eight misconceptions about growth that may be holding you back from being as intentional as you need to be.

  1. The Assumption Gap—“ I Assume That I Will Automatically Grow”
  2. The Knowledge Gap—“ I Don’t Know How to Grow”
  3. The Timing Gap—“ It’s Not the Right Time to Begin”
    1. Law of Diminishing Intent, which says, “The longer you wait to do something you should do now, the greater the odds that you will never actually do it.”
  4. The Mistake Gap—“ I’m Afraid of Making Mistakes”
    1. Growing can be a messy business. It means admitting you don’t have the answers. It requires making mistakes. It can make you look foolish. Most people don’t enjoy that. But that is the price of admission if you want to improve.
  5. The Perfection Gap—“ I Have to Find the Best Way Before I Start”
  6. The Inspiration Gap—“ I Don’t Feel Like Doing It”
    1. Jerome Bruner says, “You’re more likely to act yourself into feeling than feel yourself into action.”
  7. The Comparison Gap—“ Others Are Better Than I Am”
  8. The Expectation Gap—“ I Thought It Would Be Easier Than This”
    1. I don’t know any successful person who thinks growth comes quickly and climbing to the top is easy. It just doesn’t happen.

You can do anything you set your mind to

  • Philippians 4:13 NKJV I can do all things through Christ who strengthens (Gr. Empowers) me.

Habakkuk 2:2-3 NKJV 2 Then the Lord answered me and said: "Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it. 3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, it will not tarry.

  • What would you do if someone funded your vision?
  • How would you spend a million dollars
