Trusting in the Lord is a necessity for us to follow Him through anything.

  • Psalms 37:1-5 NAS 1 Do not fret because of evildoers, be not envious toward wrongdoers. 2 For they will wither quickly like the grass and fade like the green herb. 3 Trust in the Lord and do good; Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness. 4 Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart. 5 Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He will do it.

There is a difference between TRUST & FAITH

  • Faith is a noun.
    • It is something we HAVE.
      • As he reveals himself and his Love to us; this knowing of him in our heads (knowledge), and in our hearts (beliefs), is our evidence of Him.
    • Faith says, “I know Him, and I believe!”
      • But, Faith is not Trust.
  • Trust is a verb.
    • Trust is something we DO.
    • Trust is faith in action.
      • It is the manifestation of our faith in our thoughts and actions.
    • While faith says, “He can ….” trust says, “He is … and I will think/act accordingly”
  • It is far easier to have faith in God, than to exercise trust in Him.

  1. FAITH: Someone can believe in the result of a scripture and get the miracle described as a result of the faith without knowing how or why it happened
  2. TRUST: But to trust in someone of something it takes a knowledge of them, their character and their intent towards us.
  3. FAITH says, “I believe there is a God and he is big and powerful.”
  4. TRUST says, “that big and powerful God will protect me, care for me & watch over me all the time through anything.”

Proverbs 3:5 NAS Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.

  2. Unquestioning belief in God
  3. A religion or a system of religious beliefs

  5. Complete trust, confidence, or reliance
  6. Allegiance to some person or thing; loyalty

Trust: (Root)- Firmness

  1. Firm belief or confidence in the honesty, integrity, reliability, justice, etc. of another person or thing; faith; reliance
  2. Confident expectation, anticipation, or hope
  3. The fact of having confidence placed in one
    1. Responsibility of obligation resulting from this

A clearer distinction by comparing the adjectives:   Faithful vs Trustful

  • Faithful:
    • Maintaining allegiance to someone or something
    • Having/showing a strong sense of duty or responsibility
      • Accurate, reliable, exact
      • Full of Faith, esp. religious faith
  • Trustful:
    • Full of Trust
    • Ready to confide or believe; trusting
  • AND, there is One that is Trustworthy:
    • Worthy of Trust; Dependable; Reliable

As Christians, why do we strive for Obedience to the Word of God?

  • Based on Faith: We are instructed to Obey and we fear discipline if we do not obey
  • Based on Trust: We know the Bible’s instructions are for our best interests;

Trust is built on:

  1. Knowing the one being trusted
  2. Knowing their intent towards us
  3. Knowing their character

~~We distrust people or things that we have not proven

~~We distrust people or things that have harmed us or have a reputation of harming others

~~We distrust people that are biased

Distrust (dictionary) to regard with doubt or suspicion

Doc: Reading on trust

Psalms 9:10 AMP And they who know Your name [who have experience and acquaintance with Your mercy] will lean on and confidently put their trust in You, for You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek (inquire of and for) You [on the authority of God's Word and the right of their necessity].

  • Faith is provided to us by God.
  • Trust is developed as we
    • Become intimate with God through study of His Word.
    • Ponder, think on; study the activities of God throughout history and more importantly in our immediate circles.

Alesha Haynes vision of the sword of love stopped by a bible.

We will distrust God when we only know Him by:

  • What we’ve heard in church
  • Religious rules & traditions
  • Unbiblical expectations

Matthew 5:8 NAS Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

  • You can't know His character or trust Him until you clearly see Him and how He is

If we do not know God to trust Him we will not cling to Him through hard times & discipline

  • The Father’s voice is not always soothing and palatable to us.
    • His voice does not always sound loving
  • I have to know His character and intent for me by His word to know He does love me.
    • 1 John 4:18 NAS There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.
      • Knowing God’s love & intent causes us to trust Him and not fear dangers

The fruit of trust is faith, joy & peace

To know God will not let you be destroyed through troubles.

To know his intent and plan does not change even when you fail.

Philippians 4:11-13 NAS 11 Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. 12 I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. 13 I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

To develop Trust: Pray, Obey, “Hey!” (i.e. The revelation that your prayers were related to God’s responses). Don’t just pray and forget it. Know the Word because God will not answer prayers contrary to His Will. Remain vigilant so you can see God respond to your prayers, even if it is not how you wanted. Trust appreciates that God often answers your prayer with what you need, instead of what you want.

As we add trust to our level of Faith, our faith increases, and then ideally our level of trust should increase, and on and on, until ideally there we should develop a very close relationship with Father God built on a foundation of enormous Faith and limitless trust.

Obedience produces beneficial results.

Trust makes it exciting to sing, “Where you lead me I will follow!”
