The Invitation

Luke 14:16-24 NAS 16 But He said to him, "A man was giving a big dinner, and he invited many; 17 and at the dinner hour he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, 'Come; for everything is ready now.'  18 "But they all alike began to make excuses. The first one said to him, 'I have bought a piece of land and I need to go out and look at it; please consider me excused.'  19 "Another one said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; please consider me excused.'  20 "Another one said, 'I have married a wife, and for that reason I cannot come.'  21 "And the slave came back and reported this to his master. Then the head of the household became angry and said to his slave, 'Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the city and bring in here the poor and crippled and blind and lame.'  22 "And the slave said, 'Master, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.'  23 "And the master said to the slave, 'Go out into the highways and along the hedges, and compel them to come in, so that my house may be filled.  24 'For I tell you, none of those men who were invited shall taste of my dinner.'"

17 and at the dinner hour he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited

This wasn’t a surprise announcement that the guests didn’t know about.

The importance of the wedding

Matthew 22:2 NAS The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding feast for his son.

None of the answers were bad things

Notice that Jesus said the answers were excuses

to make excuses (Strongs): paraiteomai (par-ahee-teh'-om-ahee); to beg off, i.e. deprecate, decline, shun: KJV - avoid

We will need to prioritize God in purposely or we will passively leave Him out

Matthew 6:33 NAS But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Julie - Luke 9:57-62 NAS 57 As they were going along the road, someone said to Him, "I will follow You wherever You go." 58 And Jesus said to him, "The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head."  59 And He said to another, "Follow Me." But he said, "Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father." 60 But He said to him, "Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God."  61 Another also said, "I will follow You, Lord; but first permit me to say good-bye to those at home." 62 But Jesus said to him, "No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God."

How important is going to heaven?

How important is prospering

I've watched people over the years become distracted and have to continually be redirected back to God.

21 "And the slave came back and reported this to his master. Then the head of the household became angry

·         Matthew 22:7 NAS "But the king was enraged”

►   Why was the king mad?

►   Was He offended or get His feelings hurt?

§  Angry/enraged (Strong’s) orgizo (or-gid'-zo); to provoke to enrage, i.e. become exasperated

§  The guests had already confirmed to come

§  Always keep this in mind – as important as you are to the Father, you don’t take preeminence over the Father or His plans.

·         This statement doesn’t bother those that love the Father and His voice

·         It bothers those that are self absorbed and think they’re the center of the universe
