Guilt, Blame & Accountability

John 9:1-3 NKJV 1 Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, saying, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" 3 Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned (Message Bible - You're looking for someone to blame), but that the works of God should be revealed in him.

Today everyone is looking for blame.

  • All over the news when something goes wrong people are on a Witch Hunt to assess blame.

Even when there is guilt or malice the guilt of it is already paid for by God through the cross.

  • Jesus took our guilt.
  • Even guilt that was purposed.
    • Accountability still might play out in the person having to pay restitution or go through a time of rehabilitation.

If grace isn’t completely free it isn’t grace

Religion wants to assess blame thinking somebody has violated the deity.

  • In Christianity the deity has paid for all blame and guilt.

John 8:3-5 NAS 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, and having set her in the center of the court,  4 they said to Him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act. 5 "Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?"

John 8:10-11 NAS 10 Straightening up, Jesus said to her, "Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?"  11 She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said, "I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more."]

Mark 12:13 NAS So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, in order that they might catch Him in some statement, so that they could deliver Him to the rule and the authority of the governor.

We do want to assess the failure of the situation to find why it failed so we can fix it.

  • This would be done much easier if blame was taken out.

We need to watch even the tones of our voices to make sure that blame is not there.

Blame and accusation go hand-in-hand

Blame & Accusation are man’s way to satisfy deserved justice.

Justice has been satisfied in Jesus!

  • 2 Corinthians 5:21 NAS He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
  • 1 Peter 2:24 NAS and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
  • Hebrews 9:22 NLT In fact, according to the law of Moses, nearly everything was purified with blood. For without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness.

Self-blame needs to be something that we stop based on the fact that the Bible says we are free.

Now after we have stopped self-blame

  • We need to stop believing that we must pay for every wrong that we do.

Self-blame keeps us from receiving

Self-blame turns us away from God instead of to Him

We need to remember that the cross has forgiven everyone of every bit of guilt.

  • This means we have to forgive.
  • Some think that holding blame or guilt to someone is making them accountable.
    • Even when accountability for actions needs to happen, it needs to happen without guilt or shame or blame being assessed.
