Patrick Henry: I know not what others may choose but, as for me, give me liberty or give me death.

Alexander Tytler – 65 & died in 1813 - Was a Scottish advocate, judge, writer and historian who served as Professor of Universal History, and Greek and Roman Antiquities at the University of Edinburgh.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence known as The Tytler Cycle:

In the US we have no standard to determine what freedom is

In the church we have no standard to determine what freedom is

  • Freedom must be fought for!

Galatians 5:1 AMP IN [this] freedom Christ has made us free [and completely liberated us]; stand fast then, and do not be hampered and held ensnared and submit again to a yoke of slavery [which you have once put off].

Martin Luther King Jr.: "Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed."

General John Stark served as a leader in the War of Independence. He became widely known as the "Hero of Bennington" for his exemplary service at the Battle of Bennington in 1777.: "Live free or die: Death is not the worst of evils."

  • Freedom must be maintained!

Galatians 5:13 AMP For you, brethren, were [indeed] called to freedom; only [do not let your] freedom be an incentive to your flesh and an opportunity or excuse [for selfishness], but through love you should serve one another.

Spiritual freedom ends when we submit to the rulership of another by being obedient to their laws.

Dwight Eisenhower: "Freedom has its life in the hearts, the actions, the spirit of men and so it must be daily earned and refreshed — else like a flower cut from its life-giving roots, it will wither and die."

Abraham Lincoln: “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”

Freedom is harder to live in than slavery

Galatians 4:1-7 ESV 1 I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no different from a slave, though he is the owner of everything, 2 but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by his father. 3 In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world. 4 But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5  to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

Patrick Henry: “Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are inevitably ruined.”

Benjamin Franklin: "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Samuel Adams: "It does not take a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men."

John Basil Barnhill: “When the people fear the government there is tyranny, when the government fears the people there is liberty.”

“Liberty means responsibility. That is why most men dread it.”

Freedom from:

Religious bondage

Self-control a huge answer to staying free

A lack of it leads people into dependency through bondage

  • Freedom must be expressed!

Benjamin Franklin: “Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freeness of speech.”
