The church has turned evangelism into an event where it should be a lifestyle.

Romans 10:14 NLT But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?

2 Corinthians 5:11a & 18-19 NAS 11 Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade men… 18 Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

If you’re a child of God you need to be looking for who the Father needs you to reach out to.

  • Someone intersected you with the gospel and you need to be looking to intersect others.

Kevin: Go, therefore….

Matthew 28:18-20 NAS 18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

Jesus at the pool of Bethesda

John 5:2-9 AMP 2 Now there is in Jerusalem a pool near the Sheep Gate. This pool in the Hebrew is called Bethesda, having five porches (alcoves, colonnades, doorways). 3 In these lay a great number of sick folk — some blind, some crippled, and some paralyzed (shriveled up) — waiting for the bubbling up of the water. 4 For an angel of the Lord went down at appointed seasons into the pool and moved and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was cured of whatever disease with which he was afflicted. 5 There was a certain man there who had suffered with a deep-seated and lingering disorder for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus noticed him lying there [helpless], knowing that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said to him, Do you want to become well? [Are you really in earnest about getting well?] 7 The invalid answered, Sir, I have nobody when the water is moving to put me into the pool; but while I am trying to come [into it] myself, somebody else steps down ahead of me. 8 Jesus said to him, Get up! Pick up your bed (sleeping pad) and walk! 9 Instantly the man became well and recovered his strength and picked up his bed and walked. But that happened on the Sabbath.

  • Vs 5 - deep-seated and lingering disorder: We dismiss the familiar ones around us because we’ve tried talking to them and their condition is deep seated and they’ve been that way ever since I’ve known them.

Jesus went after one of a lot around the pool.

There was an opening

This wasn’t the first time Jesus passed the pool

We need to be mindful of the openings in people’s lives even though we’ve never seen an opening before.

Kevin: Philemon 6 AMP [And I pray] that the participation in and sharing of your faith may produce and promote full recognition and appreciation and understanding and precise knowledge of every good [thing] that is ours in [our identification with] Christ Jesus [and unto His glory].

  • Tod White quote

Ways we notice where God needs us:

  1. Holy Spirit (still small voice)
  2. Sight (do you see a need?)
  3. Sound (listen to what people are saying)

Explain the difference between evangelism and discipleship

When God gifts faith for a sign or miracle vs someone that’s been in the church and God wants them to develop their faith by the word and by being active to build faith

Todd White Video

Mark 16:17-18 NKJV 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;  18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."

Kevin: In everything you do be active for the Lord

  • Ecclesiastes 9:10 NAS Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might; for there is no activity or planning or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol where you are going.
    • Ecclesiastes 9:10 THE MESSAGE Whatever turns up, grab it and do it. And heartily! This is your last and only chance at it, For there's neither work to do nor thoughts to think in the company of the dead, where you're most certainly headed.

Don’t let shame & fear of man stop you

  • Mark 8:38 NAS "For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels."
  • Romans 1:16 NAS For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

The cross: It’s not about me

  • Galatians 2:20 NAS "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

Tools of outreach:

  • $$ Gifts of the Spirit
  • We get training as we use
  • $$ Love
  • $$ Words to solve a problem
  • $$ Physical help (money, work, etc.)
  • We need to trust God with the results and not us.
  • We are not to pre-determine a result
  • $$ Paul planted, Appolos watered but God gave the increase
