What the bible says about alcohol

First, I have alcoholism in my family

  • My biological father died from alcohol poisoning drinking vodka
  • My maternal grandfather was an alcoholic and shot himself
  • Both of my sisters had alcohol problems
  • And I was addicted to it on a lesser level

With that said, my experiences or anyone else’s does not set biblical precedence.

  • We don’t set biblical precedence on how dangerous something is.
  • When that is done we rule out tons of prophetic stuff because it can be used wrong.

Just because something is dangerous does not mean God is against it.

  • We think it’s better to run from what looks dangerous than to explore God’s parameters about it.

When there is something that carries dysfunction God sets parameters.

  • Sex is one of these things.
  • Spiritual gifts are another
  • Drinking is another
    • There are over 75 bible verses talking about drinking alcohol.

The truth, not fear, will set people free

  • I can tell you to run and hide from something and no matter whether you avoid it all your life you’ll never be free of it.
    • I can tell you what the bible says about it and you’ll set your parameters by faith and be free.
  • To those that say that at least the fear kept people away from the bad
  • I will say that fear is a spirit and it might keep people away from the bad but it will also keep them away from “dangerous” God stuff.
    • This is why religious people aren’t free
      • They use fear to control
        • That same fear also keeps them away from unveiling spiritual truths and manifestations.

So let’s look at the biblical boundaries:

  1. Is wine in the bible fermented?
    1. Wine (Hebrew) yayin (yah'-yin); from an unused root meaning to effervesce (Dictionary = to give off bubbles of gas, as fermenting liquors); wine (as fermented); by implication, intoxication.
  2. What was Jesus view on alcoholic drinks?
    1. Luke 7:33-34 NKJV 33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, 'He has a demon.'  34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'
    2. Jesus Turns the water into wine - John 2:9-10 NLT 9 When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over. 10 "A host always serves the best wine first," he said. "Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!"
  3. So, is drinking sin?
    1. Not inherently but to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin (James 4:17 NKJV) and whatever is not from faith is sin (Romans 14:23 NKJV).
      1. Whatever gives the enemy access is sin
  4. Bible scriptures about intoxication
    1. Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, And whoever is intoxicated by it is not wise.
    2. Ephesians 5:18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit
    3. Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, And whoever is intoxicated by it is not wise.
    4. Galatians 5:21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
    5. Genesis 9:21 He drank of the wine and became drunk, and uncovered himself inside his tent.
    6. Proverbs 23:21 For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.
    7. Luke 21:34 Be on guard, so that your hearts will not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day will not come on you suddenly like a trap
  5. Leadership restrictions
    1. Leviticus 10:9 Do not drink wine or strong drink, neither you nor your sons with you, when you come into the tent of meeting, so that you will not die--it is a perpetual statute throughout your generations
    2. Proverbs 31:4-5 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, It is not for kings to drink wine, Or for rulers to desire strong drink, For they will drink and forget what is decreed, And pervert the rights of all the afflicted.
    3. Titus 1:7 For the overseer must be above reproach as God's steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain
    4. Isaiah 28:7 And these also reel with wine and stagger from strong drink: The priest and the prophet reel with strong drink, They are confused by wine, they stagger from strong drink; They reel while having visions, They totter when rendering judgment.
  6. Party drinking addressed
    1. 1 Peter 4:1-5 MSG 1 Since Jesus went through everything you're going through and more, learn to think like him. Think of your sufferings as a weaning from that old sinful habit of always expecting to get your own way. 2 Then you'll be able to live out your days free to pursue what God wants instead of being tyrannized by what you want. 3 You've already put in your time in that God-ignorant way of life, partying night after night, a drunken and profligate life. Now it's time to be done with it for good. 4 Of course, your old friends don't understand why you don't join in with the old gang anymore. But you don't have to give an account to them. 5 They're the ones who will be called on the carpet — and before God himself.
    2. Romans 13:13 Let us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy.
  7. Permissible drinking
    1. Isaiah 25:6 The LORD of hosts will prepare a lavish banquet for all peoples on this mountain; A banquet of aged wine, choice pieces with marrow, And refined, aged wine.
    2. 1 Timothy 5:23 No longer drink water exclusively, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.

Alcohol consumption & unplanned pregnancy

  • Teenage drinking lowers inhibitions enough to have contributed to one-third of the pregnancies in 14-21 year olds. A staggering ninety-one percent of those girls weren't even planning to have sex when they conceived.
  • According to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unwanted Pregnancy, more than a third of sexually active adults age 15 to 24 have revealed the use of alcohol influenced them to do something sexual.
  • Approximately 50 percent of all pregnancies in the United States are unplanned, and of these, 43 percent will end in abortion.
  • Drinking has been shown to play a predominant role in sexual violence, with more than half of college campus rapes included alcohol use by either the victim, the attacker, or both. Experts believe alcohol causes people to both misread and mis-send sexual signals, and also can create situations where people are vulnerable to attack.

Drunk driving statistics

  • Every two minutes, a person is injured in a drunk driving crash.
  • In 2013, 10,076 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for nearly one-third (31%) of all traffic-related deaths in the United States

God makes us accountable for those who drinking could cause them to stumble

  • Romans 14:21 NAS It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine, or to do anything by which your brother stumbles.
